Review of the film "Pompeii"

Last night, we went to see 'Pompeii' , a new Canadian-German film (2014) about the eruption of Vesuvius in 3D. I've never seen a 3D movie before - it was an interesting experience. Snowflakes, ash and other debris Seems to fall between oneself and the movie screen. There is certainly a sense of heightened reality. Thankfully, I did not Feel That flaming rocks were hurtling at me out of the screen and I do now feel that I've walked the streets of Pompeii ITS During last days: I have seen the Things That Pliny the Younger wrote about as a witness to the eruption on the Bay of Naples. However, I do wonder Whether this film is being shown around Naples, literally "New Town", founded after the destruction of Pompeii.

The reconstruction of Pompeii and Its surroundings is historically accurate, Particularly the tidal wave and the collapse of the side of Vesuvius initiating ITS end in the thick pyroclastic cloud of fire and ash buried the towns around ITS Which foot. The people of Pompeii Should have heeded the first signs of cracks appearing in Their buildings and fled, but they did not know the mountain was a volcano. They thought it was Vulcan's forge and That the rumblings were symptomatic of divine 'working'.

There is a suggestion That the bloody arena fights, The Slaughters were at the circus Also understood as human sacrifices, intended to appease the god Vulcan and keep him at bay. Such a thought recurred Also to other peoples, as for example to the Mayans and Incas in the Americas. Such bloodbaths were never enough for them, and, of course, completely useless. It is true, Nevertheless, That humanity lies under God's wrath for sin rightful ITS: 'natural' disasters are an expression of His Judgment ruling. Indeed He judges corrupt empires and individuals. We Know That no sacrifice or supposedly good work can Satisfy the true and living God - become to restitution for our sin or reconcile us with Him. His rightful wrath was only 'placated' by one thing: the sacrifice of Christ on the Cross. Christ Became the ultimate 'substitution' or 'replacement' of sacrifices. We can find peace with God only by trusting in Him as our 'Substitute' or Mediator. There were indeed Christians living then in Pompeii (not shown in the film) Among All its corruption, and who knew Believed this, giving witness to a different lifestyle. We can imagine Their prayers and righteous life. Christian symbols not have been found on the walls of some homes in Herculaneum excavated.

Touchingly, the film takes the famous lava deathmould of two 'lovers' embracing and reconstructs Their romantic story. Behind the story is a dark portrayal of the Roman Empire as fascist, showing the downtrodden characters like Those resisting Hitler. However, my favorite Cambridge academic, classics professor Mary Beard paints a truer picture of Pompeii as a very complex, fluid and decadent society. Slaves of international origin easily Became citizens and ordinary people had a very good seafood diet. Archeologists have heroically Examined the sewers of Herculaneum.

'Pompeii' shows the domination of Its Empire by Rome as utterly heartless, violent and brutal. But war was an economic activity for the Romans and the Etruscans. War Brought in fresh blood, cheap talent, manpower in slaves, lands and resources. In fact, the growth of the Roman Empire Took place over centuries, I know it was not the Nazis 'blitzkrieg'. The Romans went about it by slowly annexing neighboring territory after territory. The Roman mentality of domination by the war was probably inherited from the Etruscans, who, as this article Explains, had Middle Eastern roots. I know the Romans were ethnic hybrids, partly Etruscan (non-Indo-European) and partly Italic (Indo-European). The first Roman kings were Etruscan. The swastika symbol used by the Nazis can be found on Etruscan grave goods.

Swastikas on Etruscan grave goods of around 700BC

The loathsome tradition of gladiatorial fights Examined Throughout the film, was inherited by the Romans from the Etruscans. The Etruscans probably came from Lydia in Turkey, even from around Troy itself. This indeed is the claim made by the Greek historian Herodotus and by Virgil. They Both Claimed That the Romans had some roots in Turkey, even around Troy.

This dark side of the Romans - the enjoyment of the public execution of men through combat - still Undermines the admiration we feel for the Pax Romana and their skills as engineers, soldiers, administrators, legislators and poets. The tradition of gladiatorial fights may have come from the Middle East. It was stopped by Christianity - originating_server another religion in the Middle East. This was a huge victory in the old battle between God and rebellion, between the people of God and warlike Empires of the Middle East described Throughout the Old Testament.

Would I recommend going to see this movie? On the whole - yes, but in 3D - on the understanding That there are some old cliches and That it is a hybrid of "Gladiator," the Hollywood disaster movie and the recent exhibition on Pompeii, at the British Museum. Also there are some episodes of the superhuman holding of grudges during an eruption, Which defy all reason!
English translation of this article --------------------------------------------- -----------------------

Last night we went to see 'Pompeii', a new Canadian-German film (2014) sull'eruzione of Vesuvius in 3D. I had never before seen a 3D movie - it was an interesting experience. Snowflakes, ash and other debris fall into it literally looked like him in the movies. There is definitely this sort of hyper-reality. Luckily, I did not feel that the rocks rained flaming me on the screen, but I feel like I have really walked the streets of Pompeii during its last days, I have seen things that Pliny the Younger wrote as a witness of the eruption in the Gulf of Naples. However, I would love to hear the reaction of the modern Neapolitans after seeing this film. They have in fact built Naples as "new city" (Neapolis) around that same volcano as if today were off ... Anything!

The reconstruction of Pompeii and its surroundings that makes the filter is historically accurate, in particular, it is realistic to the tsunami and the collapse of the side of Vesuvius, that starts to throw in a pyroclastic cloud, fire and ash dense, so as to bury the city around his feet. The inhabitants of Pompeii had seen and heard the first signs dell'eruzioone when cracks were formed in their buildings and were the first earthquake warning. They were not, however, fled: they did not know the mountain was a volcano? Perhaps they thought that it was the forge of Vulcan, and that the signs were only symptomatic that the gods themselves "working".

The film suggests that the bloody gladiatorial combat in the arena, the massacres of the circus had been intended as a human sacrifice designed to appease the god Vulcan and keep it at bay. In fact, such a thought even resorted to other peoples, such as the Mayans and Incas in the Americas. These bloodshed for them were never sufficient, and, of course, they were completely useless (except for the "fun" stadium crowds present there). It is true, however, that humanity is right under the wrath of God for his sin: the 'natural' disasters are undoubtedly an expression of His judgment. In fact, God regularly considers both empires corrupt individuals. We know that no sacrifice or good works supposed to be able to meet the living God and the living - get a refund for our sin and reconcile us with Him. His anger can be legitimate only 'appeased' by one thing: the sacrifice of Christ on the Cross met with repentance and faith. The ultimate sacrifice of Christ, infattio, it has become the 'sostitutuzione'' par excellence in every possible sacrifice. We can find peace with God, trusting in Him as our 'substitute' or mediator. There were then in Pompeii Christians (not shown in the film) who lived in that atmosphere morally corrupt, they knew and believed, giving evidence of a different lifestyle. We can imagine their prayers and righteous life. Christian symbols were, in fact, found on the walls of some houses in the ruins of Herculaneum, a city that had suffered the same fate as Pompeii

Touching in the film, is the embrace of two lovers immortalized by the lava flow and still visible today, and reconstructs their romance. Behind all this there is like a dark portrait of the Roman Empire similar to the Nazi-fascist, which shows the characters oppressed as those who resisted Hitler. However, my favorite academic of Cambridge, the history professor Mary Beard classic paints a truer picture of Pompeii as a very complex society, decadent and smooth. Slaves of international origin could easily become citizens and the common people had a good diet based on fish. Archaeologists have examined today heroically even the sewers of ancient Herculaneum.

"Pompeii" shows the domain of his empire from Rome as something utterly ruthless, violent and brutal. The war, however, for the Romans and Etruscans gfli was an economic activity. The war brought "fresh blood" talent cheap labor of slaves, new lands and resources. In fact, the growth of the Roman Empire took place over the course of centuries, it was not a "blitzkrieg" style Nazi. The Romans have expanded slowly after vterritorio gradually annexing territory. The mentality of the Roman domination war was probably inherited from the Etruscans, who had roots in the Middle East. So the Romans had un'etnica hybrid, partly Etruscan (non-Indo-European) and partly Italica (Indo - European Union). The early Roman kings were Etruscans. The symbol of the swastika used by the Nazis can be found as well in the symbolism of the Etruscans.

The tradition of abhorrent gladiatorial combat graphically illustrated in the course of the film, was inherited by the Romans from the Etruscans. The Etruscans probably came from Lydia in Turkey, and perhaps also from Troy itself. In fact, this is the statement made by the greek historian Herodotus and Virgil. Both argued that the Romans had some roots in Turkey.

This dark side of the Romans - enjoy it for the public performance of men through combat - affect in a way that often the admiration we feel for the Pax Romana and their skills as engineers, soldiers, administrators, legislators and poets. The tradition of gladiator fights could come from the Middle East. It 'was stopped, however, by Christianity - well of Middle Eastern origin. This was a great victory in the old war between God and rebellion against His law, among the people of God described by the Old Testament.

I would recommend going to see this movie? Overall, yes, but in 3D - the understanding that there are some old clichés, and that can be said to be a hybrid of n "Gladiator", the film about the disasters of Hollywood and the recent exhibition on Pompeii at the British Museum. There are also some episodes of some of his characters as they can keep violent grudges and fight even during an eruption, something that defies all reason!
